Why Polycarbonate Roofs Are So Uncomfortable

Polycarbonate is lightweight and cheap to put up, which is why it was used on so many conservatories built between the 1980s and early 2000s. The original assessment of the task in hand had to be reviewed a couple of times as the roof structure was not as anticipated. The company were determined to do a good job despite this. I cannot comment on the effectiveness of the new roof as it is in a rented property which I do not, currently, have access to.

They arrived at the appointment at a time that was quite late for them but good for us, shows their commitment. The work was really well done. I had 2 guys arrive early, they attached the new roof and didn’t make a sound or leave any mess. I was shocked it literally took a few hours. All the old roof was taken away for free. The roof itself before having it done was horrible. It was glass and full of bugs and always leaking. Since then, it’s cool in summer and warm in winter. Roof never leaks I have never even seen a spider in there. I am so glad we had the roof done. Why is my polycarbonate conservatory so uncomfortable even though the roof looks fine?

Polycarbonate has very little thermal resistance, which means it lets heat build up fast in summer and gives up heat quickly in winter. The roof can look perfectly intact, with no cracks or yellowing, and still leave the room impossible to use from April through October and cold from November through March. The problem is not the condition of the polycarbonate, it is what polycarbonate is made of and what it cannot do. Adding an insulated panel system to the existing roof changes how the room performs at the most basic level, not as a repair but as a proper thermal upgrade.

How much does a polycarbonate conservatory roof upgrade cost?

Every polycarbonate conservatory is different once we look at the frame condition, the weathering and the guttering, so we do not publish a fixed price online. Will you need to remove my existing polycarbonate roof or frame?

No, not in the vast majority of cases. Our COMFIBOARD panel system is fitted directly into the existing polycarbonate roof frame, so there is normally no need to strip out the frame, remove the polycarbonate, or touch any structural element of the conservatory. The work is done largely from inside, which keeps disruption to a minimum and avoids the mess and cost of a full structural job. If your frame has unusual weathering or age-related issues that change what is needed, we will tell you clearly at the free survey before any price is agreed.

Will the inside of my conservatory look different after the upgrade?

From the outside, no change at all. Inside, your existing glazing bars stay exactly where they are. We do not box them in, add a false ceiling, or cover them over. The room keeps the same internal structure it has now, and the existing look is preserved. What changes is the performance, the room stops swinging between too hot and too cold and starts holding a steady, comfortable temperature through every season. Most homeowners tell us the change in how the room feels is more dramatic than they expected, while the room itself still looks familiar.

Will fitting insulated panels reduce the light inside my conservatory?

Yes, and we always talk through this honestly at the survey. Fitting insulated panels over the polycarbonate means less light comes in through the roof.
